Going Green

Being such a popular vacation destination, Hawaii is packed with hotels and resorts, restaurants, car rental agencies, activity vendors and shopping malls. Unfortunately, a great number of these establishments negatively affect Hawaii's fragile environment by expending vast amounts of energy and depleting precious natural resources. This impacts not only the state of Hawaii, but ultimately the entirety of planet Earth.

This section recognizes our travel partners that have taken steps to offset their carbon emissions, reduce the production of solid wastes, lessen the amount of resources they consume and lower their usage of energy. We hope to raise environmental awareness among travelers to Hawaii and to other destinations across the globe and make it easier to find the best ways to travel Green.

Why Travel Green?

The question really should be, "Why not?" The world's population reached 1 billion people back in 1800. By 2000, the population grew to a staggering 6 billion people and is projected to rise to upwards of 9 billion by 2050. As our rapid population growth puts increasing strain on the Earth's finite resources, smaller and smaller amounts of clean air and water, fuel sources and soil will be available to our children and grandchildren in the future.

Going Green

Garbage carelessly disposed of ends up in landfills and pollutes our groundwater, contaminating everything from the water we drink to the soil our food grows in. Carbon emissions generated by human activities is the primary cause of Global Warming, a rise in temperatures that threatens to raise the sea level and alter the climate, consequently affecting crop yields, forests, water supplies and the overall quality of human health.

When on vacation, you can easily do your part to protect the environment, whether it's remembering to turn off the lights and turn down the air conditioning when you leave your hotel room, choosing to use public transportation or renting a hybrid vehicle, or remembering to place your aluminum and plastic containers in the proper recycling bins instead of a garbage can.
