Honolulu Ranked With Lowest Carbon Emissions

Honolulu was ranked as the best city out of 100 of the largest metro areas in the U.S. in emitting the least amount of carbon dioxide per capita. The study by the Brookings Institution found that sprawling metropolitan areas with low cost electricity emit more CO2 per capita than densely populated cities with high cost electricity.

According to the report, Honolulu emitted about 1.4 metric tons of carbon per capita, while Lexington, Kentucky, the city with the highest carbon emissions, produced about 3.4 metric tons per capita. This study, however, only looks at carbon emissions from vehicle use and residential buildings. It does not include industrial and commercial sources, power plants and other forms of travel such as air.
