Airlines

While a "green airline" is something of a contradiction, there are a few carriers out there who are making efforts to reduce the vast amount of carbon emissions produced by their aircraft.

1) Continental Airlines:
Continental recently added 8 new Boeing 777s and 19 new Boeing Next Generation 737s (737NGs) to their fleet. The new 737NGs burn 50-percent less fuel than DC-9s and 30-percent less than MD80s, giving Continental an edge in fuel costs while at the same time reducing the carbon emissions produced. The airline plans to add more than 100 new fuel efficient Boeings to their fleet over the next 6 years.

2) Delta Airlines:
Delta's partnership with The Conservation Fund allows customers to contribute $5.50 for domestic roundtrip flights and $11 for international roundtrip flights. Every penny goes towards the Conservation Fund's Go ZeroSM Program that's helping to plant trees and restore habitats for wildlife. Additionally, for every $5.50 contributed, the Fund will plant a tree in a national wildlife refuge or protected park.

Delta's other ongoing programs include an extensive onboard recycling program (aluminum, plastic and paper); fuel conservation initiatives (weight reduction, improved fuel efficiency, engine refurbishment, reduced auxiliary power unit and much more); 50-percent reduction in water usage; incorporation of over 600 zero-emission electric vehicles for ground crew; and the promotion of a next generation Air Traffic Control system that encourages more direct aircraft routings.

3) American Airlines:
American Airlines AAdvantage® members can now offset the carbon emissions produced by their flights through the airline's partnership with Be Green. By logging on to BeGreenNow.com and purchasing Be Green's express products, customers will directly fund projects working to clean up and restore our environment. As a bonus, Be Green will award AAdvantage® members 5 miles for every $1 spent.

Additionally, Be Green offers a line of environmentally friendly, biodegradable "Gifts of Green" that include cilantro, forget-me-not or chili pepper seeds. With each purchase of these "Gifts of Green", AAdvantage® members will earn 10 miles for every $1 spent and Be Green will plant one native tree as part of a reforestation project.

4) Virgin Airlines:
Virgin was the first airline to fly with bio-fuel; the highly publicized voyage was from London to Amsterdam and the aircraft (a Boeing 747-400) had one of its tanks filled with a mixture of 20-percent bio-fuel derived from plant oils. Though facing many critics, airline boss Richard Branson is continuing his research of alternative fuels and intends to make Virgin's entire fleet bio-fuel capable.

Virgin Airlines is unfortunately unavailable in our online booking engine, but feel free to call one of our agents to schedule a flight between Virgin's many destinations: U.S. East and West Coast cities, Australia, Europe and Africa.
