For more than two hundred and twenty years, citizens of America have borne witness to the swearing in of all our Presidents and Vice Presidents. On April 30, 1789 on the balcony of Federal Hall, New York City George Washington and John Adams became the first American President and Vice President. On January 20, 2009 Americans will witness the swearing-in of Barack Obama and Joe Biden as the 44th President and Vice President of the United States.
The ceremony will be held on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building at noon with millions of Americans witnessing this in person or on television - a ceremony that represents our democracy and continuity of leadership after all these years. It is an amazing accomplishment for what is still a young country.
You can not only be a part of history but actually be there to witness what is considered one of the most historic elections in our country's history. The ceremony will start at noon when the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will administer the oath of office and America will have new leaders - President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Tickets for seats are free but can only be obtained through your Congress members. If you can't get tickets, just head to the Mall between the Capitol and the Washington Monument, where in the past, huge screens have been placed so as many people as possible can see and hear all the events taking place during the swearing in ceremony. It will be followed by the Inaugural Parade down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House and fireworks, balls and celebrations all over town.
