Description

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and is located in the province of Ontario on the northwestern shores of Lake Ontario. The city's population is extremely cosmopolitan and international, with almost fifty percent of all residents born outside of Canada. Low crime rates, a clean environment, friendly attitudes toward diversity and a generally high standard of living has made Toronto into one of the world's most livable cities and best places to visit.

Two rivers and several streams and creeks run through Toronto, the largest being the Humber River to the west and the Don River to the east, both of which flow into the Toronto Harbor. The vast, densely forested ravines carved by all the water flowing from the north into Lake Ontario are home to many parks and recreational trails. The weather in Toronto is warm and humid during the summer and particularly cold in the winter.

The diversity of the population of Toronto has made it into a major center for live theatre and other performing arts like ballet, dance, opera and orchestras. Domestic and foreign film production is another major industry, with many movies screened in Toronto before release in North America. You can visit the Distillery District, a pedestrian village with boutiques, art galleries, artist studios, small breweries and restaurants, or perhaps stroll down Canada's Walk of Fame, similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame but acknowledging the achievements of successful Canadians.

For an international experience, visit some of the ethnic neighborhoods scattered throughout the city, including Little Italy, Little Jamaica, Little India, Chinatown, Koreatown, Greektown, Portugal Village and many more. Other attractions include the Toronto Zoo, one of the largest in the world with over 5,000 animals; the Art Gallery of Ontario featuring a mixture of Canadian, European and African contemporary art work; and the Ontario Science Centre, always full of new hands-on activities and science displays that appeal particularly to children.

If you're looking for places to shop, Toronto really does have it all - malls, markets, galleries, department stores, designer outlets, bazaars and neighborhood shops. For a unique experience, spend a day at PATH, Toronto's subterranean shopping concourse with over 1,200 shops, cafés and restaurants, or hit the Fashion District in the heart of Chinatown and find terrific bargains on local fashions, fabric, furs and leathers. Bloor-Yorkville is a network of cobblestone courtyards and streets lined with charming Victorian restorations where you can shop for high end designer goods in boutiques, antique shops, jewelers and art galleries. Tiffany, Chanel, D&G and Hermes are but a few of the designer brands that can be found.

Toronto has over 7,000 places to eat that reflect tastes, cultures and ingredients from all over the world. Taste some authentic dim sum in Chinatown, dine in trattorias or cafés and sip espresso on an outdoor patio in Little Italy, try some authentic Greek cuisine in Greektown, or stop by the various grills, friendly pubs and neighborhood restaurants in The Beaches of east Toronto. The downtown Entertainment District is a great place for pre-show dining and post-theatre clubbing with some of the best eateries and clubs in town. The St. Lawrence Marketplace sells fresh produce, meats, cheeses and baked goods and has several nearby pubs and restaurants.
