There are about 1,800 hot spring areas and a large number of resorts (onsens) that have sprung up over the past 2,000 years. They are reputed to cure what ails you and though they might not really do all that, it is one of the nicest ways to let go, relax and simply enjoy yourself. Then there are the festivals held throughout the year in towns and cities across Japan. If you have a chance to attend one, don't pass up the opportunity. Many are held in the evening and they usually include a parade of lights, Taiko drums, beautifully costumed men and women and is definitely a great way to experience the spirit of Japan.
There is a large misconception about Japan and that is how very expensive it is. If you stay in a four-star hotel and eat at only the top restaurants, it will be expensive, as in most other large cities - think New York City. But if you eat at average restaurants you can get a delicious meal, beautifully presented for a fraction of the cost. Like other developed nations, Japan is as expensive as you are willing to spend.
